It has been announced that 11 April 2012 will be a national public holiday for all states and territories of Malaysia to celebrate the installation of the new King of Malaysia. The public holiday will be on a Wednesday.
The Sultan of Kedah, who ascended to the throne on 13 December 2011, will officially be installed as the 14th Yang-di-Pertuan Agong on the public holiday, with an installation ceremony and banquet at Istana Negara (the new national palace on Jalan Duta). A public holiday is commonly declared for the day of installation.
This will be the second reign of Sultan Abdul Halim of Kedah as monarch, with his first reign being from 1970 to 1975. The role of King is rotated amongst the heads of nine of states of Malaysia, with each reigning for a period of five years after an election process held by a council from the same states. Prior to the 14th Yang-di-Pertuan Agong, the throne was held by Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin, sultan of Terengganu.
